my first portland snow. driving around curvy hills-- terrified. gusts of flurry on the broadway bridge, icy petals melting on the windshield. i made it home to my deserted street, paved by a blanket of white & untouched by tire tracks... so inviting it almost looked warm. fix a hot cocoa, call everyone i know who cares about snow, make japanese dumpling soup.
note my frozen fingers, rougey.
the whiteness is a nice clean slate. to the new year. this new years i want to breathe confetti & glitter, pour some absinthe in my gullet, & climb a mountain bundled in three sweaters & a patchworkquilt.
before this melts away, i want to make snow candy. i remember laura & mary pouring molasses into little shapes in the snow the "little house in the big woods" book. i used to have a little house on the prarie cookbook, but that was one recipe we couldn't make in the desert. i think that i just need to heat the molasses & brown sugar to a certain temp & pour it on the snow-- some recipes say maple syrup instead. perhaps i'll try both.
or maybe i should just make raspados!!
